Steel construction for e-scrap recycling plant in England

Mobile phone, PC, coffee machine, micro wave, television or MP3 player – the list of electronical devices which we use every day is long. But what will happen to them if they are defect or if we do not need them anymore? When we want to get rid of our practical companion he suddenly represent a threat to our environment. According to the European Environment Authority we deal with round about 40 million tons of electronical scrap every year. Germany alone is responsible for 1.8 tons of contaminant refuse every year.

In order to fight the growing refuse problem, the European Union passed a law to avoid refuse by reusing it in an environment friendly way. For the correct processing of single components recycling plants specially designed for electronical devices are used. On the instruction of a world-wide operating manufacturer of South-Germany, IHNEN-AURICH manufactured the steel construction for the electrical and electronical scrap recycling plant, which is beeing installed in England at present.

Delivery and Installation just-in-time

In only five weeks time the supporting structure, the running surface and the staircases were produced in Aurich. A special focus was on the high dynamic loads and vibrations which would act upon the 70 tons heavy steel construction when operating. “As in this case we are not dealing with a rigid construction, like e.g. in hall constructions, special statical calculations were necessary”, explains the head of construction department Johann Meyer, who carried out the planning together with his colleague Egon Priet. The IHNEN team is specially proud about the fact that the steel construction perfectly harmonizes with the recycling technology. “According to the delivered drawings for machine construction, we developped a suitable supporting structure. As the plant consists of 18 different stations a high degree of know-how and precision was needed.”

The team of IHNEN AURICH is provided with such competences. The assignment of the installation leader Alfred Oltmanns and metal constructor Timo Lange who did an excellent job in England is one of many prooves for this. After the pre-mounting in Aurich the support construction for the e-scrap recycling plant was taken into pieces and loaded on 4 trucks and transported to the place of destination to Daventry in Northamptonshire, England. “When calculating the transport I was stage fright” says Johann Meyer. “Everything had to be planned in such a way that the delivery and installation could take place just-in-time.” The transport and also the installation in cooperation with the staff from the manufacturer of South-Germany was smoothly.”The comminution machines and the materials-handling devices partly lead through the steel construction. To ensure a perfect fitting we put the individual components together hand in hand with the plant constructor”, explains Timo Lange. Due to the local conditions improvising and team work were the key factors. “As we worked with simple lifting and transport tools, only one of us was able to carry out the installation while the other had to operate the vehicle. But it worked without any problems”, adds Alfred Oltmanns, who has already installed various plants of this type.

The commissioning of the e-scrap-recycling plant with a total construction const of abround 5 million British pounds is planned for the beginning of the coming year. Via a patened cross-current cutting machine household devices, computer and entertainment electronic will be chopped up and led into the valuable substance circulation. After the fully automatic extracting its individual component parts such as different kind of metals, boards, cables, batteries, plastic and small magnets are ready to be resold.
